The list of terms we hear about the environment seems endless and gives cause for concern -- green – sustainable –
carbon footprint – recycle – natural – chemical free, etc.
It can be very confusing . Can we make a difference? As consumers we need to become more environmentally aware and aim for
longevity in design rather than thinking as a disposable society.
Tips on Designing for Longevity:
- When purchasing furniture choose classic “timeless” pieces, and save the latest trends for smaller accessories.
If you choose a style that suits your lifestyle, you will be able to enjoy your furniture for years.
- Buy the best quality that you can afford. A good quality hardwood frame is a lifetime investment and can be
reupholstered in the years ahead.
- When choosing hardwood flooring choose a colour in the medium range. Very light and very dark colours move in and out
of fashion and can become quickly dated, which often leads to refinishing.
- Put lighting where it is needed, and at the appropriate height. Put lights on different switches to control the
amount of electricity used and enhance the mood of the room.
- Beware of claims that a product is “all natural”that is not supported by a 3rd party study and their seal of approval.
Lead is natural, as is asbestos, mercury and uranium.
